The town of Einsiedeln, picturesquely situated at the foot of the Alps, surrounded by heaths, located not far from the largest water reservoir in the basin - Lake Sihl, is a unique destination. It is also a center of Marian pilgrimage in Switzerland, with a Benedictine abbey dating back to the 10th century.
Every tourist coming to Einsiedeln must visit the 18th-century Einsiedeln church, one of Switzerland's greatest baroque building attractions. Also noteworthy are: the chapel of Our Lady, the historic monastery library and the royal stables. A visit to the Abbey allows for silence and concentration, and also lets you better understand the monastic life of the Benedictines.
For every tourist and pilgrim, of course, there is an obligatory bow in front of the Black Madonna - a miraculous figure of the Mother of God, which the monks decorate in one of 40 robes, depending on the season and the calendar of holidays.
Einsiedeln is the perfect place to spend your holidays. Long summer days support outdoor activity. Swimming, surfing, sailing on the Sihlsee, mountain trips, bike rides, forest walks away from the hustle and bustle of the city, or playing golf on the 18-hole course are just some of them.
For all those who need peace and quiet, a stay in Einsiedeln will guarantee priceless moments of relaxation: blissful laziness on the beach by the lake and bathing areas, or lazy afternoons in local restaurants offering traditional specialties (we highly recommend delicious cheeses, wine and traditionally baked gingerbread !!!).
And for those who care about their body, they offer wellness services: brine baths, steam baths, saunas, massages and treatments. Just thinking about it makes you feel better... ;)
And if the weather is not favorable and not conducive to outdoor activities, there will also be no time for boredom, because the Museum of Minerals and the Gingerbread Museum have interesting cultural offer.
How to get there?
You can reach Einsiedeln by train from Zurich. Journey takes around 50 minutes. Pilgrims to the sanctuary often choose to march – taking the Way of St. Jacob from Rapperrswil, they reach Einsiedeln in about 5 hours.
